A mild sedative that is often used in Pediatric Dentistry is nitrous oxide. It is a safe and effective way to help a child relax during dental procedures. It only takes a few minutes to both begin to work as well as wear off. This is a great solution for children who need minor dental work. For some children, sedation is not effective enough to manage their treatment. In these cases, general anesthesia is a better option. It is important to remember that for some patients, general anesthesia is the safest way to complete dental work. Keeping our patients safe is our number one goal!
Are there any risks or side effects?
Although it is very safe, there are some rare side effects from nitrous oxide. The most common ones are headache and feeling tired or nauseous. If these effects are felt, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and oxygen is used to flush the nitrous oxide away. It only takes a few minutes, and it is very safe.
What should we know before the appointment?
To help your child be more comfortable, they should have a light meal (not a large meal) before an appointment where nitrous oxide will be used.
How will my child feel while under the effects of Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide makes children feel relaxed and warm. Sometimes it even makes a child forget the appointment altogether.
