Our fantastic pediatric dentist in Aurora CO wants to discuss health with you! Of course, as a parent, you will already know most of what we talk about in this blog. However, we still want to put the information out for those who may need it. At our Epic Dentistry for Kids office, we practice pediatric dentistry in Aurora CO. There is a lot currently going on in the world, and instead of our patients and their parents being stressed out, we want to help you all practice healthy habits. There are several things that we should be doing to maintain our own health and the health of others. We recommend reading this blog!
Remember Brushing and Flossing
The easiest healthy habit we want everyone to continue to do is to keep brushing and flossing their teeth daily. We have mentioned in previous blogs just how important brushing and flossing your teeth daily can be. It is even more critical now. Brushing and flossing keep your teeth and gums clean, this rids of all bacteria that could potentially try to grow in between those spaces.
If your body is trying to fight infection inside of your mouth, and you are not routinely brushing or flossing, your immune system can be compromised. Your body is more able to fight off infection when you maintain these healthy habits. Remember to brush and floss at least twice a day, once in the morning, and once before bed.
Refrain From Touching Your Face
Did you know that on a daily basis, humans tend to touch their faces around twenty-three times an hour?! We are always touching our mouths, noses, and eyes, and it can actually make us sick. When we touch our faces, we are putting bacteria and germs onto our faces. When we do this, we are touching mucous membranes, and this leads to germs and bacteria entering the body. This is one of the ways that respiratory infections can happen.
Try to avoid touching your face as much as possible. If you are having trouble and catch yourself touching your face a lot, you will want to wash your hands frequently and wipe down any surfaces you continuously come into contact with regularly. Not touching your face can also help with acne! Also, a trick to not touch your face is to wear gloves. It can be mittens. People tend not to touch their faces when their hands are covered with gloves.
Cover Your Cough
One thing that we always teach our children is to cover their coughs. Whether they use their elbows or hands, covering their coughs is taught from an early age. We cover our coughs so that we do not cough whatever comes out our throats and mouths onto others. Coughing is actually very healthy for our bodies. When we cough, we are getting out foreign particles, mucus, and microbes that can potentially make us sick.
With COVID spreading, we want to make sure that you are fully prepared to fight it off with your good health habits. It can also help to get a face mask; this can help from inhaling particles or germs that can make you sick. Also, try to carry a high alcohol percentage hand sanitizer so that way if you do need to cough, you can quickly clean and sanitize your hands until you can reach a sink.
Washing Your Hands is Vital
The most significant thing we think you should take out of this blog is that you need to wash your hands continually. Again, on a day to day basis, we touch hundreds of items and surfaces a day. Bacteria and germs can be picked up on almost every surface. We obviously cannot wash our hands every minute of every day.
However, we can take precautions to make sure we are spreading or picking up germs and bacteria very minimally. Take the extra precautions and wipe the surfaces of your home, car, workspace, and school space to avoid picking up germs. When it comes to surfaces that we do not have control over, like gas pumps, try to keep hand sanitizer on hand or wipes so you can clean your hands immediately after.
